Sometimes a little experimenting results in magic…Compass Box Experimental Grain is a blend of four different whiskies: Loch Lomond Distillery Single Grain (matured in Second Fill Bourbon Barrels), Hedonism Blended Grain (matured in Second Fill Bourbon Barrels), The North British Distillery Single Grain (matured in Recharred American Oak Barrels) and The Cameronbridge Distillery Single Grain (matured in Recharred American Oak Hogshead). Most of the blend is from the Cameronbridge and North British distilleries which throws spiced honey, coconut, orange and vanilla flavours into the mix. The Loch Lomond Single Grain is made only from peated malted barley but is distilled in a copper Coffey still rather than a pot still so it can’t be classified as a single malt. But let’s not get hung up on technicalities because what it brings to the table is an incredible herbal, mossy kind of smoke. Then add the toffee and pastry cream character of the Hedonism Blended Grain and what you end up with is a complex and dazzling interaction of flavours. This is a very limited edition whisky with only 6142 bottles produced.
